RANGERS THE WORKING CLASS HEROES

March 12, 2008 - Daily Hun Newsdesk

There is something admirable about the current Rangers management which remains true to its working class roots by constantly seeking to reinforce its squad with home grown talent.

There was a time way back in the mid-eighties when the budding young Thatcherite David Murray, attempted to seize the zeitgeist rangers_0708_squad.jpgand inculcate a somewhat more bourgeois and international ethos into the green grassy banks of the Clyde. Then everything seemed possible, Del Boy Trotter was the role model that all sought to emulate, the local wide boy done good. Equipped with the equivalent of the ubiquitous Filofax and monstrously massive pre-diluvian mobile phone, Rangers was not ashamed to yell from the highest summit; “We have loads of money!”.

How times change. Rangers has gone back to basics and now eschews any attempt to sound and even look like the vulgar nouveaux riches. Rangers has undergone a metamorphosis, a Protestant club with an increasingly non-Protestant following. A Scottish club with an increasingly worldwide appeal. A billionaire chairman with Calivinistic tendencies. The paradoxes just keep coming down good old Govan way.

And to the biggest paradox of all…..whisper it quietly..please don’t yell it. But Celtic has gone middle class. Shock! Gasp! Horror! Paddy is no longer in his midden ,but more likely Paddy is in the Mediterranean in his luxury villa.
A cursory glance around Celtic Park at match day will confirm the evolving and some might say frightening image of a Celtic support in turmoil. Parked in the main car park, the average pre-match Celtic supporter will have his Range Rover boot open through which one sees a sumptious hamper full of pheasant, foie gras, champagne and caviar.

He is more likely to be employed as a senior figure in some leading city corporation unlike his grandfather who merely swept for the corporation. (Oh how Brother Walfrid must be spinning in his sepulchre!) Celtic IS the establishment team in Scotland, how else do you explain the fact that the former Home Secretary is now their chairman? How else do you explain the fact that the previous incumbent was the deputy governor of the Bank of England? How esle do you explain the fact that champagne socialist Gorgeous George Galloway has signed up for the Brendanbeu?

But even at ground level a more disturbing picture emerges. Coatbridge’s gross domestic product is now officially double that of Larkhall. If you are born a Protestant in certain parts of Scotland, you will be born working class and will die working class. The same cannot be said of others.

This clearly is a continuation of the Tarrierization of Scotland, it is not a crime to be white, Protestant and non-academic. Rangers have proved that.
