JANUARY, THE CRUELLEST MONTH

January 16, 2008 - Daily Hun Newsdesk

_44076177_davidmurray_snsb203.jpgIt will be of scant consolation to Walter Smith to learn of Sir David Murray’s ambitious plans to build a new state-of-the art stadium to replace the ageing beauty that is Ibrox Park. Neither will the news that the G14 organization has finally seen its last days, mainly due to the persistent probings of the unsung hero that is Martin Bain.

Like Hitler with his troops before the gates of Moscow, the Clydeside general has had his ultimate victory snatched from him by the vagaries of the Scottish weather and a most inclement January. The Scottish Premier League lay there for the taking by Smith’s storm troopers.

They simply had to traverse the final hurdle. Unfortunately it was a bridge too far.

With the enemy in disarray and seemingly at Walter’s mercy, the weather came to rescue them from almost certain oblivion. Substitute the east of Glasgow for the east of Europe. Substitute Cossacks for Kafflicks, and strange parallels begin to become apparent. There are of course distinct differences between then and now. The phenomenon of global warming is a reality which we cannot deny. When we see a mass of hot air descend around Celtic Park, we should not automatically assume that it is a Gordon Strachan led press conference.

Climactic change however does not fully explain why all the Rangers games were postponed and yet a few miles away, the Celtic game went ahead. There are strange, dark forces at work (no, I am not referring to Evander Sno).

Like the exhausted, demoralized Soviet forces who gained their respite with the big freeze in 1941, the tarrier team has been reinforced in the teeming rain. While Walter was forced to sit on his hands, aided and abetted by a compliant SFA, a German H(e)inkel bomber has been brought in sneakily through the backdoor, along with another inscrutable oriental. This is typical of what we have come to expect from Celtic. The next thing you’ll be telling me is that Tommy Burns was even considered as Scotland’s national manager. I will be praying for sun!
